Nearly all of the houses earmarked to be demolished (Nos 2-12 Alma Rd., Nos 83-87 Arthur Road) are boarded up or empty, including the former home of Sir Sydney Camm, the commemorated designer of the Hurricane fighter.

UPDATE: In March 2002 plans were announced to renovate these homes and build car parking facilities above the existing car park adjacent to Alexandra Gardens

March 1999

Luftwaffe Pilots Anger at House Demolition Proposals - Thanks to our campaign against the council's proposals to demolish the home of Hurricane designer, Sir Sydney Camm, and build a car park, a letter published in The Daily Telegraph last week has generated international anger.

The Windsor Observer (5th March 1999) has given front page coverage to the story under the headline "German air aces rally for Camm" - full story is available in the 5th March edition of The Windsor Observer.

The furore started when Gerhard Everwyn of Munich learned about the plans to demolish the famous aircraft designer's house. Click here to see his original letter, adjusted for web display.

The Windsor Express has carried a story under the headline

Plans may be resurrected after petition
Traders' car park push

Apparently Edward Mercer, the new president of Windsor and District Chamber of Commerce, is proposing that people should be persuaded "eventually" not to bring thir cars into town centres "but in the short term there is no viable alternative".

We have news for Mr Mercer, there is an alternative. He, his Chamber members and the staff of the businesses they represent, could push for a Park and Ride scheme so that their cars don't take up spaces that could be used by their customers!

Successes in Our Battle

1. Objections
It is clear that local residents have been strongly voicing their objections to yet another town centre car park and the accompanying increase in traffic problems. The council has been surprised at the number of objections received so far and this is starting to delay the execution of the project.

2. Delay
The longer the project can be delayed, the weaker the council's argument to erect the proposed car park as a short term solution to Windsor's parking problems. The revised Plans Meeting now takes place on March 17th and we are told there will be another consultation meeting with residents before then. Watch this space.

3. Media
We have been successful in getting some local media coverage that expresses our views and this coverage is continued with an article headed "Camm's house goes on-line" on page 3 of The Express dated January 14th 1999. This issue also features an excellent letter from Lindsay Blake on page 32 headed "Car Park is not a Cure". Please see the Express to read these articles in full. We are hopeful of coverage in the Observer too, published on 15th January 1999. We are grateful for the coverage that we have received in these two publications.

4. Internet Web Site
We have this Web Site dedicated to the issue that may be viewed by a much wider audience than just the local community and to which contributions are welcome.
