The War Memorial

The War Memorial

Following an enquiry from The Windsor Local History Group we were keen to establish the date of the inauguration of the Clewer War Memorial Recreation Ground and the dedication of the War Memorial itself.

According to the Slough Express archives, there was an inauguration (perhaps marking the start of construction) on Saturday 28 January 1923 in the presence of the Earl of Athlone. The Windsor Express from that time may include more details. Additional research is required. We have since acquired this invitation (below) to the unveiling of the completed memorial. The date is 30th June 1923. This invitation belonged to a member of the committee, Mr Shorter, who was involved in the construction of the memorial.

Memorial Invitation

The Memorial is reported as being a fountain (more accurately a 'drinking fountain') as was popular in this, pre-vandalism days, constructed from Cornish granite. There are about 180 names noted on the Memorial.

The service was conducted by the Rector of Clewer Arthur T C Cowie, assisted by the Vicar of Clewer St Stephen's, the Revd William Edward Boys, vicar from 1917-1930.

Before the end of the ceremony, the buglers of the Third Battalion of the Grenadier Guards sounded 'The Last Post' and 'Reveille'.

The memorial cost £300 (type unclear) including £195 for the obelisk and the money was raised by public subscription to which the Mayor, the Hon. A P Henderson, contributed generously.

Photographs
Those killed in action will be included here as photographs come available.
Descendants of those listed are invited to send any pictures they may have.

1. The Clewer War Memorial on Dedworth Road lists 190 men who died in both World Wars, although the great majority seem to have fallen in the Great War. The memorial gives only name and initials and does not distinguish between the two wars.
2. A list of 114 World War I dead listed on the memorial in the Brocas Chantry in the Church of St. Andrew, Clewer. This hives Christian name and surnames.
3. The "Soldiers Died in the Great War" Roll of Honour originally published by HMSO in 81 volumes in 1920/21 and now available as a CD ROM. This listing provides military information in addition to some indications of place of birth, enlistment and residence.
4. The Common Wealth War Graves Commission "Debt of Honour" Register, a searchable database on the internet. This provides details of place of burial or memorial for men and women killed in both world wars and in some cases, information on the next of kin.
5. The Ken Shepherd Archive of Names on the Great War memorials in the Windsor area, published by the Western Front Association. This summarises a major work by Ken, sadly interrupted by his death in 1994, which compiled details of over 600 men from the Windsor area who died as a result of the First World War.
6. A comprehensive database of men serving in the Princess Charlotte of Wales (Royal Berkshire Regiment) courtesy of John M. Chapman.

There are still some inconsistencies to be resolved (possibly caused by confusion over initials on the memorial) and some names which cannot be found in either "Soldiers Died" or the "Debt of Honour" register, the CWGC or in the Shepherd Archive. Ken Shepherd seems to have arrived at the same queries from his comprehensive research.
