Horse-drawn carriage ride by Orchard Poyle

 

Enjoy a half hour or hour long ride around Windsor and a rare option to ride down the Long Walk. Departs from taxi rank, High Street Windsor, opposite Central Station entrance. (Windsor Royal Station).
  The carriage collects visitors from the High Street, opposite the Harte and Garter Hotel in front of the Castle wall, to the left of the statue of Queen Victoria.
  Rides are available for either 30 minutes or 1 hour and run throughout the year, subject to weather conditions, from 12.30pm to 5.30pm, or later according to demand.
  The price is £19.00 per carriage for a 30 minute ride, £39.00 per carriage for a 1 hour ride.

River Thames and Romney Lock

Boat Hire and River Trips on
The Thames

Excellent views of the town and castle during a 35 minute trip upstream. Departures regularly from Windsor Promenade. Longer trips also available. River Trip Info - French Brothers

Self Drive Motorboats and Rowing Boats. Description and pictures.

Romney Lock. Watch the boats making their way up and downstream. An enjoyable half hour.
Walk on up Romney Lock Island towards the weir on the far side of the island, with views across to Eton College.

Tour Buses

Special areas are set aside for both kite flying and model planes in Windsor Great Park to the north of the A332 Bracknell/Ascot road on leaving Windsor.

Ascot Racecourse

Ascot

Famed for the Royal Ascot meeting in June when the Queen attends, arriving in a carriage procession at approx 2.00pm. Other meetings during the year. Public access to Ascot Heath in the centre of the racecourse all year round. In 2005 Royal Ascot takes place at York Racecourse while the Ascot grandstand and facilities are rebuilt.

Heathrow Airport

Although there is limited access for public viewing, there are roads adjacent to the airport where planes may be watched landing and taking off at close quarters. Also, good views are to be had from the top floor of central area Car Parks. Sadly Concorde flights ceased in October 2003. They were quite dramatic! All we can offer now is a series of videos of Concorde arrivals and departures!


Specially For Children

Beckonscot Model Village

Walk through a delightful and beautifully maintained model village of the 1930s. Model steam trains (well, electric steam trains!), a coal mine, lake, airport, plus a wealth of other intricately detailed models with a delightful touch of humour too.
Thoroughly recommended for 3 -12 years, and parents will like it too!

Odds Farm Park

Slough-Beaconsfield Road to Wooburn Common, High Wycombe.
Rare and interesting farm animals presented with children in mind.

The Sounding Arch

Brunel Railway Bridge, MaidenheadView from A4 as it crosses Thames at Maidenhead then a short walk beside the Thames to sample its remarkable echo and wonder at how such a 'flat' arch could be made with bricks!! Berkshire Shire Horses Centre

A4 west of Maidenhead. Learn all about these large, impressive horses. Includes cart rides and farrier workshop.

Model Boats

Most Sunday mornings at Black Park. By car on Uxbridge road via Slough. Watch for sign to Black Park on dual carriageway beyond Slough.


Memorials and Monuments

Runnymede Air Forces Memorial, Runnymede
Staines direction, after Old Windsor.
High on the hill overlooking Runnymede and the Thames. There is a signposted pathway to and from Runnymede through the wooded hillside or signposted by road from Englefield Green.
 

The Magna Carta Memorial, Runnymede
where King John set his seal to Magna Carta in 1215

John F Kennedy Memorial
Set in an acre of ground given to the American people in 1965 in memory of President Kennedy, who died 'by an assassin's hand, 22 November 1963'.

Web Site

Kew Bridge Steam Museum, Brentford. Featuring steam engines, many of which are run regularly, largest of which is the three storey, 90" Beam Engine. Please note these are not railway steam engines but pumping engines as used to pump water from mines, and to deliver drinking water to the London supply.
Follow M4 to Chiswick and signs to Kew. The location of the museum is readily identifiable by its very tall tower.

When arriving by car from M4 follow signs to Outlet Centre - strangely named - but just follow the signs!
A major steam museum housed in the sheds where the engines were once made.

Victory, Warrior, Mary Rose and many other fascinating maritime exhibits.

Delightful steam rides of all kinds from another age.

The Watercress Steam Railway
A very satisfying steam ride through rolling countryside.

Somerset

The West Somerset Steam Railway
One of the longest steam rides. Wonderful countryside ending (or starting!) with a run along the seashore.
Bishop's Lydeard, near Taunton, Somerset running to Minehead and back.

West Sussex

Rejectamenta - The Nostalgia Museum
Signposted left from Chichester - Witterings road. An astonishing collection of ephemera and other items that you thought you had forgotten! Delightful, shop window style presentation.

Weald and Downland Open Air Museum adjacent to Goodwood Racecourse and Singleton village.

An astonishing collection of old, and very old, buildings from the south east of England have been moved and reconstructed here.

The Best Beach in England!

West Wittering offers vast areas of parking right beside the beach with endless and safe expanses of sand for children 3 hours each side of low tide. Small shops and cafes too. Wind surfing centre. Kite flying. Fishing. Sailing from nearby Itchenor and other small ports in Chichester Harbour. Harbour tours.
