Saturday Organ Recitals

Recitals on the first Saturday of the month, from after Easter, at 6.30 p.m. (lasting 70 minutes or so).

Tickets £5 (some concessions) on the door.

The organ is a 4-manual Harrison and Harrison, dating from 1965.

Sir Walter Parratt, Organist at St George's Chapel

Sir Walter Parratt was organist of St. George's Chapel and Master of the Queen's (or King's) Music to Queen Victoria, King Edward VII and King George V, from 1893-1924. The duties of Master of the Queen's Music (Musick) normally requires the composition of small works from time to time to celebrate a Royal birth, marriage or to commemorate a Royal death.  Sir Walter Parratt was the son of Thomas Parratt, an organist at the Parish Church, Huddersfield. Sir Walter was knighted in 1892. He was a leading organ teacher, appointed Chair of Music at Oxford University in 1908, succeeding Hubert Parry. Donald Tovey and Geoffrey Parratt wrote abiography of Sir Walter titled: Walter Parratt: Master Of The Music.
    His monument in Huddersfield Parish Church records that he was "by example and precept the outstanding organist of his time".
