William
Menzies, 1904
A
Short History of the Park and Forest
From the Preface: "This volume is dedicated to the memory
of my father, William Menzies, whose official position as deputy
Surveyor of Windsor Great Park and Forest for twenty-nine years
afforded him, special opportunities for obtaining reliable information
relating to the Royal Domain. I have largely availed myself of
his original work published in 1864 which was the first history
of Windsor Park and Forest ever produced and the earliest published
work illustrated by photographs. A few of these are reproduced
specially for this volume, the trees having changed so little
in character the illustrations represent them practically as
they are at the present day." William Menzies. 1904.

Royal Castle,
Rebel Town
Puritan Windsor
in Civil War & Commonwealth
S R South, 1981
Limited Edition
copy no. 42
Signed by
the author
FRONT COVER: Cromwell's
cabinet, with the Devil - and Cornelius
Holland, Windsor's MP (extreme left). (SNPG)
A near perfect
copy, perfect binding, cover boards and dust jacket. Just two
lightly marked pages. Hardly perceptible fading to spine.
For a thousand years Windsor has been a
Royal town - except for two decades in the 17th century. This
book is about those 20 years of drama, intrigue and civil war.
From 1640, when the town sent two puritans
to Parliament, until the Restoration of Charles II in 1660, Windsor
was anti-king, a stronghold of puritan politics and preaching,
and ultimately the source of Cromwell's New Model Army.
Before the storm broke, Charles I hawked
and hunted forest and park, pleasured in his castle and prayed
in St George's Chapel. By October '42, Parliament held the castle.
Prince Rupert attacked it, but failed, and the only Royalists
to see inside were prisoners of war.
In 1643 the Dean and Canons of St George's
were thrown out, and those of their treasures not hastily hidden
were systematically plundered. The town itself was host to thousands
of troops, mostly short of pay, and troops and town stripped
forest and parks of anything they could eat or burn.
The King returned to Windsor twice as a
captive, once on his way to Whitehall and death, and lastly for
burial. As the parish record states: 'King Charles in the Castle'.
If the King's shadow lay heavy on Windsor,
other men held the local stage - the fanatic Cornelius Holland,
tough John Venn, strongman Whichcot, accommodating Bulstrode
Whitelocke. Cromwell, Fairfax, Ireton and Essex came and went;
indeed the Army Council ran much of the nation's business here.
Leveller Lillburne stayed at the Garter, where the Revolutionary
Agreement of the People was drafted; another Leveller, John Wildman
lived up to his reputation, and captured the castle after Cromwell's
death. Enforced guests included the crazy Christopher Feake,
devious George Villiers and notorious Capt. Browne Bushell. These
and many others crowd the narrative of those turbulent years.
Finally, Capt. Harry Nicholls took the
castle for the King in 1660, and six years later life returned
to normal, with Pepys' telling comment: 'the most romantique
castle in the world'.
ROYAL CASTLE, REBEL TOWN tells the story
of Windsor's role in the Civil War and Commonwealth for the first
time in full detail. Published in limited and general editions,
it will appeal to Windsorians, and to students of the period,
both as an entertaining and fascinating narrative, and as a significant
contribution to our understanding of small-town life in 17th
century England.
S R South, b. 1907, was Senior History
Master at Windsor Grammar School from 1930 - 1968, past Chairman
of the Windsor and Eton Society, and a Labour councillor for
Windsor for 36 years. He published a number of carefully researched
books about Windsor.
